Claude Cowork for Windows: Availability, Setup, and Alternatives

5 min read ·

Claude Cowork is available on Windows as of February 12, 2026. Anthropic launched the feature for macOS on January 12, 2026, and extended Windows support one month later through the Claude desktop application. Cowork requires a paid Claude subscription (Pro, Team, or Enterprise) and lets Claude operate your computer autonomously to complete multi-step tasks.

This guide covers the Windows requirements, setup steps, current limitations, and open-source alternatives — including OpenClaw, which offers similar desktop agent capabilities without a subscription.

What Is Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's desktop agent feature that allows Claude to operate your computer directly — clicking buttons, typing text, opening applications, and managing files. Unlike standard Claude chat, Cowork takes autonomous actions on your screen rather than just generating text responses.

Anthropic launched Cowork on January 12, 2026, initially for macOS only, as part of the Claude computer use initiative. The feature runs inside the Claude desktop app and uses screen recognition to identify UI elements, read content, and interact with any visible application. As of April 2026, Cowork is available on both macOS and Windows, with Linux support not yet announced.

Windows Requirements and Compatibility

Claude Cowork for Windows requires Windows 10 (version 1903 or later) or Windows 11, the Claude desktop application, and a paid Claude subscription.

RequirementDetails
Operating SystemWindows 10 (1903+) or Windows 11
Claude Desktop AppLatest version from claude.ai/download
SubscriptionPro ($20/mo), Team ($30/mo per seat), or Enterprise
InternetRequired — Cowork processes screen data via Anthropic's API
DisplaySingle monitor recommended for best accuracy

As noted in Anthropic's support documentation, Cowork sends screenshots of your screen to Anthropic's servers for processing. This means all task execution requires an active internet connection, and sensitive on-screen content may be transmitted.

Setup Steps on Windows

Setting up Claude Cowork on Windows takes approximately five minutes and requires no technical configuration beyond installing the desktop app.

Step 1: Download and install the Claude desktop app from claude.ai/download. Run the installer and follow the standard Windows setup wizard.

Step 2: Open the Claude desktop app and sign in with your paid Claude account (Pro, Team, or Enterprise).

Step 3: Navigate to Settings and enable the Cowork feature. You may need to grant screen recording and accessibility permissions when prompted by Windows.

Step 4: Start a new Cowork session by clicking the Cowork button in the chat interface. Describe the task you want Claude to perform, and it will begin operating your computer autonomously.

Step 5: Monitor Claude's actions in the desktop app window. You can pause, redirect, or stop the session at any time.

Open-Source Alternatives

Several open-source tools provide desktop agent capabilities similar to Claude Cowork, without requiring a paid subscription.

OpenClaw: The leading open-source AI agent framework. OpenClaw runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, supports any LLM provider (Claude, GPT, Gemini, Llama via Ollama), and is fully free to self-host. It can execute multi-step tasks, manage files, browse the web, and integrate with external APIs. See our Claude Cowork vs OpenClaw comparison for a detailed breakdown.

Kuse Cowork: An open-source desktop agent inspired by Claude Cowork. Kuse uses screen recognition to interact with desktop applications and supports multiple LLM backends. It is under active development as of April 2026.

Open Interpreter: A terminal-based tool that lets LLMs execute code and control your computer through a command-line interface. It supports Claude, GPT, and local models, and runs on all major operating systems.

How OpenClaw Compares to Claude Cowork

OpenClaw and Claude Cowork take fundamentally different approaches to AI-powered task execution. Cowork operates through screen recognition and UI interaction, while OpenClaw uses direct API integrations, code execution, and file-system access.

OpenClaw's model-agnostic design means you can use whichever LLM fits your task and budget. For more on how OpenClaw works as an AI agent, see our Claude Dispatch guide.

Limitations and Tradeoffs

Claude Cowork on Windows has several constraints to be aware of. It requires a paid subscription with no free tier. All screen data is sent to Anthropic's servers, which may be a concern for users working with sensitive information. Multi-monitor setups can reduce accuracy, as Cowork works best on a single display.

The feature is limited to interacting with visible on-screen applications — it cannot operate background processes or interact with apps that are minimized. Linux is not yet supported. When not to use Cowork: if your workflow involves sensitive data you cannot send to a third-party server, if you need multi-model flexibility, or if you need an agent that runs on Linux.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Claude Cowork available on Windows?

Yes. Anthropic released Claude Cowork for Windows on February 12, 2026, roughly one month after the initial macOS launch. It requires the Claude desktop app for Windows, a Pro, Team, or Enterprise subscription, and Windows 10 or later.

Do I need a subscription for Claude Cowork?

Yes. Claude Cowork requires a paid Claude subscription — either Pro ($20/month), Team ($30/month per seat), or Enterprise (custom pricing). The feature is not available on the free Claude tier. As of April 2026, there is no standalone Cowork plan.

What are free alternatives to Claude Cowork on Windows?

OpenClaw is the leading open-source alternative. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, supports any LLM (Claude, GPT, Gemini, local models via Ollama), and is fully free to self-host. Other options include Kuse Cowork (open-source desktop agent) and Open Interpreter (terminal-based computer control). Unlike Cowork, these tools do not require a subscription.

Can Claude Cowork run in the background on Windows?

Yes. Once you start a Cowork session, Claude operates your computer autonomously — clicking, typing, opening apps, and managing files — while you work on other tasks or step away. You can monitor its progress in the Claude desktop app window and pause or stop the session at any time.
