Before diving into best practices, it helps to understand the three most common ways memory fails in OpenClaw deployments. Each has a different root cause and a different fix.
Every AI model has a maximum context window — the total amount of text it can process in a single request. When a conversation exceeds this limit, the oldest messages are silently dropped. The agent doesn't know they're gone. It just loses access to whatever was at the beginning of the conversation.
This is the most common source of "my agent forgot something" reports, and it's the easiest to prevent. The fix is implementing summarization or archiving before the context fills up.
OpenClaw stores memory data on disk. If your Docker Compose file doesn't map the memory directory to a persistent volume, the data lives inside the container's ephemeral filesystem. Every time the container restarts — whether for an update, a crash, or a server reboot — everything is gone.
This is a setup mistake, not a runtime issue. Check your Docker Compose file now. If you don't see a volume mount for the memory directory, you're one restart away from losing everything.
If you've configured a vector database or external memory store, the connection can silently fail. OpenClaw may fall back to in-memory storage (which is lost on restart) without any obvious error. The agent appears to work fine until you realize it hasn't been persisting anything for days.

The foundation of reliable memory is correct Docker volume configuration. Here's what a properly configured Docker Compose file looks like for memory persistence:

The critical lines are the volume mounts. Named volumes (openclaw_data, openclaw_memory) persist across container restarts. If your existing setup uses bind mounts (e.g., ./data:/app/data), those also work — they persist as long as the host directory exists.
What to avoid:
/tmp or other temporary directories as mount targets.:ro flag will prevent the agent from saving new memories.After configuring volumes, verify by restarting the container and checking that previously stored data is still present: docker compose restart openclaw && docker compose exec openclaw ls /app/memory/
The context window is a hard constraint. Even with perfect persistence, your agent can only use a limited amount of context in any given interaction. Managing this limit is one of the most important memory management skills.
The most effective approach is automatic summarization. When a conversation reaches a configurable threshold (e.g., 70% of the context window), OpenClaw summarizes the older portion and replaces the detailed history with the summary. The agent retains the key information while freeing up space for new messages.
Configure this in your config.yaml:

This tells OpenClaw to summarize when the context hits 70% capacity, use Haiku (fast and cheap) for summarization, and always keep the 20 most recent messages in full detail.
An alternative is archiving: when the context fills up, older messages are moved to long-term storage (file-based or vector database) and removed from the active context. The agent can retrieve them later via RAG if needed.

Persistent volumes protect you from container restarts. Backups protect you from everything else — disk failure, accidental deletion, corrupted data, and botched upgrades.
Set up a cron job that runs daily and backs up all memory-related volumes:

Local backups protect against software failures but not hardware failures. Add an rsync or S3 upload step to push backups off-server:

Most VPS providers (Hostinger, Hetzner, DigitalOcean) offer automated server snapshots. Enable weekly snapshots as an additional safety net. This captures the entire server state, including Docker volumes, configurations, and system settings.
Memory isn't "set and forget." Production agents accumulate data over time, and without periodic maintenance, memory quality degrades. Here's a monthly hygiene routine:

For file-based memory, this means editing or deleting memory files. For vector databases, delete outdated collections or documents.
Agents often store the same information multiple times — the client's phone number in three different conversations, the project deadline mentioned in five separate threads. Consolidate these into a single, authoritative memory entry. This reduces storage, improves retrieval accuracy, and prevents conflicting information.
Test that your agent can retrieve its most important memories. Ask it about key facts, client details, or workflow preferences that it should know. If retrieval fails, investigate whether the data was accidentally deleted, improperly embedded, or overshadowed by newer, less relevant data.
As your agent's responsibilities evolve, your memory structure should evolve with it. A memory system organized for personal task management may not work well when the agent starts handling customer support. Restructure as needed, and document your memory organization so you can maintain it consistently.
Don't wait for something to break before checking on memory. Implement basic monitoring that alerts you to problems early:
Simple monitoring can be as basic as a daily cron job that checks disk usage and vector store connectivity, logging results to a file you review weekly.

Back up the Docker volumes that contain your memory data. For file-based memory, this is the data directory mapped in Docker Compose. For ChromaDB, include the chromadb_data volume. Run a memory audit monthly for production agents. Remove conversations that are no longer relevant, consolidate duplicate information, and verify that high-priority memories are still accessible. For vector databases, periodically re-embed older content if you've upgraded your embedding model. Avoid aggressive cleanup — it's better to have slightly noisy memory than to accidentally delete something the agent needs.
Memory is stored separately from the OpenClaw application. As long as your Docker volumes are persistent and correctly mapped, updating OpenClaw (pulling a new image and restarting) will not affect stored memory. However, always take a backup before major version upgrades in case the memory schema changes. The release notes specify when migration steps are needed.
